The 2018 FIFA world cup is already upon us. The competition is set to kick off today (June 14) with an opening game between Saudi Arabia and Russia (who is playing host) at the 80,000 capacity Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia.
Usually, the competition is opened by a brief celebration which features exciting musical performances and an array of exotic displays – this edition is no different. For the Russia 2018 World Cup opening ceremony, FIFA has announced that Robbie Williams and Aida Garifullina will grace the stadium to bless guests and viewers worldwide with noteworthy musical performances.
Robbie Williams is a 44-year old an award-winning British pop icon. He is according to Wikipedia, the best-selling British solo artist in the United Kingdom and the best selling non-Latino artist in Latin America. Six of his albums are among the top 100 biggest-selling albums in the United Kingdom–four albums in the top 60–and in 2006 he entered the Guinness Book of World Records for selling 1.6 million tickets of his Close Encounters Tour in a single day.
Aida Garifullina is a revered and multiple-award-winning Russian operatic soprano singer. She is also winner of the 2013 Operalia competition (The annual international World Opera Competition for young opera singers).
According to the organizer’s, the 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony will have a slightly different format compared to previous editions of the tournament, with a particular focus on musical acts. The show will also take place much closer to kick-off, just half an hour before the start of the match.
Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull were headlines acts at the 2014 opening ceremony in Brazil.
It remains to be known if rapper and actor – Will Smith, Nicky Jam and Era Istrefi who composed the 2018 FIFA world cup theme song “Live It Up” will be performing at the opening ceremony but it has been revealed that there will be displays by roughly 500 dancers and gymnasts.
